Even Newton &#8220;stood upon the shoulders of giants.&#8221;) Otherwise, protect it while it is economically viable and then allow others to build upon it after a reasonable period of time. You can learn more about Jefferson&#8217;s ideas, and about Copyright in general by reading the e-book &#8220;The Public Domain&#8221; by James Boyle. It&#8217;s even available as a free download.
